Alcohol intoxication, an underdiagnosed problem?

To show that alcohol intoxication may be underdiagnosed in childhood, we describe four patients in whom it was not suspected until blood alcohol concentrations were measured as part of a toxicology screen.

Alcohol intoxication and serum osmolality.

The relation between serum osmolality and blood-alcohol was studied prospectively in 565 acute trauma patients. The two measurements were closely correlated. It is therefore possible to estimate the blood-alcohol from serum osmolality to assist in the clinical management of acutely injured patients.

Rhabdomyolysis following acute alcohol intoxication.

The case of a fit young man who developed rhabdomyolysis after a short period of immobilization following acute alcohol intoxication is described. Rhabdomyolysis should be considered in an intoxicated patient presenting with muscle tenderness, particularly after immobilization.
